Grand Image: How did you get your start in art?
IO: I’ve been drawn to the magical beauty of fine arts and design since childhood. After a successful career in architecture and design, I transitioned into fine art to explore new ways to express my emotions. I became a licensed artist, which allowed me to combine my passion for creativity with my professional experience.
Grand Image: How did you develop your style?
IO: My style developed organically through a blend of traditional and new media, heavily influenced by my architectural background. I love to explore different techniques, subjects, and mediums, constantly experimenting and seeking new ways to express myself in art. As a multimedia artist with 15 years in the licensing industry, I don’t limit myself to a specific medium. I’m always open to change, and each piece reflects my mood and the spirit of the moment, resulting in a unique expression every time I create.
Grand Image: Where are you from and how is that reflected in your work?
IO: I live in Los Angeles, and this vibrant city significantly influences my art. The diverse culture, dynamic urban landscapes, and stunning natural surroundings inspire my creativity. You can see the interplay of architectural elements and the beauty of nature in my work, capturing the energy and spirit of this unique environment.
Grand Image: How has your relationship with art changed the way you view the world?
IO: Art has transformed my perception of the world, teaching me to appreciate fleeting moments filled with emotion. It encourages me to find beauty in everyday life and to capture those moments, reminding me that life unfolds in snippets of time.
Grand Image: Your artworks feel fabulously futuristic and yet old-school and timeless. Can you tell us your inspiration behind your “Fragmented Realities” series and let us know what you hope a viewer sees in them?
IO: The "Fragmented Realities" series is a monochrome digital collage that merges elements of nature, architecture, and geometric forms. My inspiration stems from the juxtaposition of these different realms, exploring how they coexist and influence one another. I hope viewers see a dialogue between the organic and the structured, prompting them to reflect on their own experiences with the world around them. Through this series, I aim to evoke a sense of wonder and contemplation about our fragmented perceptions of reality.
Grand Image: How many years have you been an artist? Can you tell us about a key moment in your journey that helped define your style or your identity?
IO: I’ve been a professional artist for 15 years. My journey began as a child in an art studio, where I explored various mediums and techniques. This early passion led me to pursue education in architecture and design. After a successful career in architecture, I transitioned to art full-time and became a licensed artist. I started collaborating with publishing companies, interior designers, and decorators on a wide range of projects for public spaces, offices, private homes, hotels, restaurants, wellness centers, cruise lines, and more. A key moment for me was realizing how to blend my architectural background with my artistic vision, which helped define my style and identity as a multimedia artist.
Grand Image: What is your current source of inspiration?
IO: Currently, I draw inspiration from the beauty of the world around me. Whether it’s nature, architecture, or cultural experiences, I spend hours exploring my surroundings, which infuses my work with the energy and spirit of those moments.
Grand Image: What does your artwork say about you as a person?
IO: My artwork reflects my inner world—my emotions, passions, and curiosities. It speaks to my desire for connection and understanding, inviting viewers to engage with their own feelings and memories through my creations.
Grand Image: Which artists inspire you?
IO: As an architect, I was inspired by Le Corbusier. His innovative approach to design and functionality has profoundly influenced my perspective on space and form in art. I appreciate his ability to blend modernism with a strong sense of aesthetics, pushing the boundaries of architecture. This inspiration extends to my artistic practice, where I aim to create pieces that resonate with both structure and emotional depth.
My artistic inspiration also comes from masters like Gustav Klimt, Pablo Picasso, René Magritte, Andy Warhol, and Salvador Dalí. I admire Klimt's intricate patterns and use of gold, which evoke deep emotion and beauty. Picasso's innovative approach to form and perspective continually challenges traditional boundaries, while Magritte's surrealism captivates me with its dreamlike quality. Warhol's pop art aesthetic and commentary on consumerism resonate with my interest in contemporary culture, and Dalí's imaginative landscapes inspire me to explore the depths of creativity. Each of these artists has left a significant mark on my artistic journey, encouraging me to blend various styles and techniques.
Grand Image: If you could have your artwork hung anywhere in the world, where would you like that to be and why?
IO: For me, the location of my artwork doesn't matter. What truly matters is the feelings of the people who view it. If my art can bring joy and evoke positive emotions in others, that is the highest reward for me. Whether it’s in a public space, a private home, or a wellness center, my goal is for my art to resonate with viewers and enhance their environment. I want to create an experience that makes their day a little brighter and inspires positive feelings.
Grand Image: You work in many creative media. Do you have a favorite style or tool to create with? How does your richly varied background inform your artistic choices?
IO: While I enjoy working with various media, I find myself particularly drawn to mixed media, blending traditional and digital techniques. I love the smell and texture of painting, whether it’s acrylic, oil, pastel, or watercolor. At the same time, I appreciate the possibilities that computer programs offer to create unique effects and new artistic options. I’m very curious and always looking for new ways to innovate in my work. My background in architecture and design gives me a unique perspective, allowing me to combine structure with spontaneity. This approach enables me to create depth and dimension, infusing my art with both precision and emotional expression. The interplay of these elements reflects my journey and enhances the richness of my artistic choices.
Grand Image: Do you choose to stay on top of current trends?
IO: I always stay on top of current trends because I appreciate progress and the evolution of art. I keep an eye on emerging styles, techniques, and cultural movements through various platforms, such as art publications, social media, and exhibitions. This allows me to incorporate fresh ideas into my work while maintaining my unique voice. Embracing trends helps me stay relevant and inspired, encouraging me to experiment and grow as an artist.
Grand Image: What is your favorite way to implement self care?
IO: I practice self-care through nature walks and meditation. These moments allow me to recharge and maintain balance in my life. Spending time in nature helps me connect with my surroundings and find peace, while meditation provides clarity and focus. This rejuvenation enables me to return to my art with renewed energy and inspiration.
Grand Image: What advice would you give someone starting out as an artist?
IO: My advice is to embrace experimentation and be true to your emotions. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; they often lead to discovery. Build a supportive network and remember that your unique voice is your greatest asset.
