Lori Dubois
Grand Image: How did you get your start in art?
LD: I was born into a culture of artists in New York and surrounded by art. My mother was a most indelible influence. She was an artfully creative mentor and mural artist who enjoyed experimenting with different mediums and styles. Additionally, her artistic view of nature instilled a keen awareness of surrounding beauty. My mom stressed the endless personality and fluency of nature.
Grand Image: How did you develop your style?
LD: Even though, I grew up surrounded by landscape art, I later applied my artistic DNA to a successful career in marketing, graphic art and web design at a major electronics giant in New Jersey. This experience broadened my experimental curiosity for color and composition and enhanced my artistic capacity with graphic dimension.
However, in the next chapter, a passion for the shoreline lured me to the New England coast where I returned to my painting roots and rekindled a connection to art and nature.
CREATIVE UNITY:
The creative unity of painting and graphic design resulted in cultivating my modern tranquility collections. My love of mixed media and unique art techniques are devoted to creating a contemporary and calming vibe.
My versatile collections are a unique fusion of color and composition intended to impart a relaxed mood within a statement piece. Creating art is my Zen; and it keeps me inspired and connected to my mom's legacy.
Grand Image: Where are you from and how is that reflected in your work?
LD: Growing up in the Northeast provided access to urban, rural, and coastal perspectives. Each destination provided a distinctive landscape with substantial variation.
Grand Image: How has your relationship with art changed the way you view the world?
LD: My artistic awareness covers a full spectrum of inspiration from nature’s spontaneity to the structured architectural angles and shadows. There is wonder in every corner of the world which translates into artistic perspective.
Grand Image: What was the inspiration behind your newest abstract landscapes?
LD: For me, destination landscapes define relaxation. Incorporating a rendering of serenity into the space you live adds a little oasis to daily life. The seamless blend of calming landscapes with abstract style creates a backdrop for a contemporary sanctuary. I discovered landscapes and abstracts are very compatible which is why my modern landscapes are synchronized with abstract influence.
Grand Image: How many years have you been an artist? Can you tell us about a key moment in your journey that helped define your style or your identity?
LD: Art was a way of life; so, I’ve been creating for a long time! I was certainly influenced by my mom’s love of nature and organic focus. However, I was also fortunate to become skilled at graphic art where I was introduced to geometric and abstract symmetry. It became addictive. And then it happened… When I returned to painting and discovered a unity between landscape and abstracts, it became my Ah – Ha moment!
Grand Image: What is your current source of inspiration?
LD: For me, inspiration is a state of mind that can come from a place or experience. The key is awareness of your surroundings and senses.
I strive to capture the essence of sea, land and the ever-changing skyline. It’s amazing how fortunate we are to have nature's symphony of color and subjects as a backdrop in our lives. Within each day, no matter the time or season, the sky is an open canvas of infinite and perfected color and formation; we only need take the time to notice.
Grand Image: What does your artwork say about you as a person?
LD: I would say my art is an expression of inspiration and gratitude for even the most unassuming things like shadows and reflections which provide beauty and intrigue.
Grand Image: What artists inspire you? What do you like about them?
LD: Artist Auguste Rodin’s impressive mastery of form, light, and shadow has always been an inspiration to me.
I also find Artist Henri Matisse’s ability to unite color and lines and incorporate tonal harmonies a great influence. I especially appreciate how he sought a balance of purity and serenity.
Both artists’ utilization of dimension and expression achieved empowered results.
Grand Image: If you could have your artwork hung anywhere in the world, where would you like that to be and why?
LD: For me, art is a universal language. So, it’s not so much where the art is located, as much as knowing my art is adding a meaningful essence of tranquility which is memorable.
Grand Image: Legacy is very important to you. Can you tell us a bit about what legacy means to you and what kind of legacy you would like to leave?
LD: Legacy is important because I was fortunate to have my mother’s indelible artistic influence become a legacy.
While accompanying my mom for her cancer treatments, I recall she noticed some industrial art on the walls and mentioned that landscapes or florals would be far more soothing.
After her passing, I received a random call from a hospital requesting my tranquil art for a treatment center. I knew this request was no coincidence. For me, it was her way of encouraging me to create art with meaning. It’s a great feeling to contribute towards well-being and possible healing by providing a calming backdrop.
Grand Image: Do you choose to stay on top of trends?
LD: I have always had an ardent fascination for fashion and interior design which are often driven by evolving trends. I believe fashion and art correlate as an extension of expression and lifestyle.
So, staying on top of current trends is important because it invigorates my potential to keep my collections fresh. It inspires me to extend my reach and experiment with new art techniques and colorways to enhance my works.
Grand Image: What is your favorite way to implement self care?
LD: Don’t sweat the small stuff; and practice GRATITUDE first and foremost. It’s the best way to make the most of each day, what you do, what you have and where you’re headed. It’s a great way to stay grounded in awareness and be proud of all that is accomplished and learned. I also like to set goals and remain open to new possibilities.
Grand Image: What advice would you give someone starting out as an artist?
LD: Be TRUE to yourself…. Immerse yourself in learning and practicing. Then, focus on the type or style of art which speaks to you best. Don’t be distracted by competition. Instead focus on awareness of surroundings and what inspires you.
