LIGHTVIEW
Student Housing Community —
Northeastern University
When Northeastern University academics take up residence at LightView they will find an urban and dynamic housing complex that waves the flag for a new era of student living. Developers American Campus Communities called in Grand Image to add the interior design elements and we were excited to see where the challenge led. What has resulted is an art collection that celebrates and solidifies a sense of place and inspires the LightView residents to dream as big as some of the Boston greats that have gone before them.

Splashes of color and floating snatches of poetry interweave with blended camera shots of the local neighborhood of Roxbury for a center stage custom wallcovering in the reception. Half-seen faces, bicycles and buses in movement, and buildings both shadowed and detailed give this original artwork a dreamlike quality in which both the fixed and the fleeting have a story to tell.
In the fitness center students are reminded that it isn't only the brain that needs exercise with some icons of the past showing how it's done. The threads that tie the triumphs of yesterday with the aspirations of today are not typically seen beyond the mind's eye but in this photographic group of vintage champions it has been given solid form. Boxer, skater, cyclist, and baseball player have each been given string embellishments that enrich sepia tones with color and animation.
Further inspiration from local heroes and heroines can be found in the study lounge where five Boston greats oversee the students as they get down to the more serious side of academic life. This venerable group that includes Ralph Waldo Emmerson, Bobbi Gibb, and Melnea Cass uses the photographic images of some extraordinary people and combines them with the extraordinary digital wizardry of local artist Tom Rogers to striking effect.
LightView also provides ample space for the community's residents to kick back, socialize, and play. The Katie Todaro commissioned 'Road Warrior' series printed on white aluminum projects bright primary bursts from one wall of the lounge. Here, three classic vehicles are given a stylized twist before heading off on some adventure to who knows where. Across the other side of the room, a further custom-curated piece shows what results when the creative talents of our in-house Digital Studio and 3D Studio come together. Using multiple layers of wood and mixed tones, this unique artwork all but jumps off the wall as it traces the geographical outline of Boston. For the more contemplative student, there are some stunning one-of-a-kind artworks such as the geometric abstract that brings a corridor to life with its layered graphics on wood.
With LightView, our art consultants and creative team have shown what higher education interior design can look like at its innovative and design-driven best, introducing an array of mediums and linking what came before with what comes next. And what better place to gather art that inspires, encourages imagination, and suggests what tomorrow might hold than a student community.
