Meridian on First
Ballpark District, Washington DC
Located in DC’s bustling Ballpark District, just steps away from the Navy Yard-Ballpark Metro Station, Meridian on First is located in one of the District’s most dynamic, walkable neighborhoods. Inspiration for the project began by examining the area, its history, and its evolution. Focusing on younger renters, the design team crafted each space to foster social engagement while providing intimate nooks that offer residents a space of their own.

The common areas are designed to provide a myriad of touch down opportunities, complete with outlets for charging. The sunny lobby and roof deck level both feature a backdrop of light woods, textures, and neutral tones accentuated with bold colors. Art is a significant focus throughout. The curated assortment of playful artwork punctuates corridors and lobbies alike while paying homage to the historic Navy Yard.
Created for the “Live-Work-Play” lifestyle, this urban domicile includes multiple coworking and hangout opportunities from the main lobby to the coworking mezzanine. On the roof level, colorful work pods provide private concentration havens, along with an array of seating opportunities on the roof deck. Stadium seating adds volume to the lobby and creates an impactful and functional Work-Play area for residents who crave a social environment, yet prefer not to interact. All told, the project features light-filled spaces from the lobby to the rooftop, where the fitness center, with a yoga and spin room, is designed to connect the outdoors both visually and materially.
A Note from the Artist
“I created these pieces by first sourcing vintage photos of dancers from the Library of Congress and similar public domain image libraries. The dancers and other objects were digitally collaged into cityscapes and other settings, then selectively recolored to include vibrant, unexpected pops of color, playing well with the surrealistic and joyful qualities of each scene.”
